First in Line

Princesa Alvarez, a First in Line senior from Spring, Texas, had wanted to come to Baylor University since she was in middle school. She was always interested in the University because of its Christian commitment—but while she was in high school, Baylor became recognized as a “Research 1” institution, which sealed the deal. 

Alvarez was selected to the FILSA scholarship program, which first-generation students apply for before their freshman year. The program includes the Success Academy, which Alvarez participated in before Baylor’s Welcome Week to prepare her for her first semester in college and introduce her to first-generation mentors. These mentors provided helpful resources when she encountered challenges in her classes, and she found they were always willing to talk about anything going on in her life.

First in Line Mentorship Program
Starting college as a first-generation student is a big step—and you don’t have to take it alone. The First in Line Mentorship Program connects first-year, first-generation students with trained peer mentors who offer guidance, encouragement, and support throughout the year.

FirstGen Forward, formerly the Center for First-generation Student Success, has announced Baylor University as one of 14 higher education institutions selected to its inaugural class of FirstGen Forward Network Champions.

FirstGen Forward Network Champion institutions are an exclusive group, who serve as national leaders in advancing first-generation efforts and contributing to an important knowledge base of evidence-based practices, leadership engagement and scaling student supports. Baylor has been involved with the FirstGen Forward Network since 2020. 

Baylor University's First in Line (FIL) program has been selected as the 2024 NASPA Excellence Award Bronze Honoree for First-generation Student Success. The Excellence Awards annually recognize members who are transforming higher education through outstanding programs and innovative services.
